Why Duende?

Pronounced DWEHN-deh.

Duende is a Spanish word with many meanings, from mischievous spirits to an indefinable charm. But the inspiration for the name comes from the concept of duende in art: a raw, almost mystical force of emotion and authentic expression. Born from struggle, rooted in the soul, and capable of moving us in ways that words cannot.

For me, it's the passion and energy I bring to our sessions. It's the grit, determination, and vulnerable bravery my patients bring when they believe they can get better and insist on getting the care they deserve. Even after years of pain. Even after being dismissed or ignored by the medical system.

I first encountered the concept of duende through Federico García Lorca, a queer, anti-fascist poet and playwright of the early 20th century who delivered a lecture on the subject. I studied his plays in high school and later had the chance to explore my heritage and his poetry while studying abroad in his hometown of Granada, Spain.

Lorca was revolutionary in both his artistic techniques and his confrontation of class inequality, sexism, and sexual repression. He refused to hide his political views and brought theater to underserved communities.

I'm a queer Latina who shares Lorca's commitment to challenging inequity. At Duende, I put that into practice through sliding-scale pricing, charitable giving, and dignified care for all.

Duende Physical Therapy is an ode to queer expression, rebellion against oppression, the precious brevity of life, and the stubborn, irrational hope that things can get better.
